The dial is set with diamonds on an 18-carat gold base. Many of the OYSTER models feature a sunray effect that reflects a light sheen. This effect requires a sophisticated brushing technique that creates a pattern of engravings that extends from the center of the watch face outwards. The light is dispersed along the markings, creating a subtle yet distinctive effect that reveals itself in different shades as the wrist moves. Once the sunray effect has been achieved, the watch is then colored by physical vapor deposition or electroplating, and finally finished with an oil lacquer.

The craftsmen set the stones with extreme precision, with each stone precisely aligned and calibrated in its place to ensure that it is securely adorned in a gold or platinum setting. In addition to the quality of the gemstones, Rolex also places stringent requirements on the gemstone setting, including the height and precise alignment, orientation and position of the stones, the regularity, solidity and proportions of the setting, and the fine finish of the metal mounting.
